The political turn is the part of her record that gets quoted most. She entered the 2003 California recall race for governor, a crowded election that drew candidates from well outside politics, and she ran as a working adult performer with her stage name on the ballot. Whatever a reader thinks of the campaign, it was a canny use of fame: the race gave her airtime no scene could buy, and she handled it with the same cheerful nerve she brought to a set. It also fixed a public image that has outlasted most of her films.
